IED evaluations cover the normative, programmatic, and operational areas of the Organization, including all main pillars and themes of the United Nations.

Peace and security

UN efforts to maintain peace and security comprise one of the foundational areas of work for the Organization. We evaluate UN peacekeeping operations under the Department of Peace Operations (DPO), which includes 14 peacekeeping missions, as well as UN peace making and peace building work under the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and the Office of Disarmament Affairs (ODA), which include special political missions.

Sustainable development

A large array of UN agencies, funds and programmes are working to advance sustainable development and to assist those most in need. We assess UN entities, primarily in the Secretariat, that implement programmes in the areas of economic development, trade, crime, environment, law, gender equality, and women's empowerment. With the adoption of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), IED is focusing its evaluative assessments to help the Organization pinpoint its strength and weaknesses in contributing to the achievement of the SDGs.

Human rights and humanitarian assistance

As an integral part of its Charter, the UN monitors human rights abuses and works with governments to protect the rights of all. We evaluate programmes implemented by entities such as the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR) as well as the human rights components of peacekeeping operations. The UN is also relied upon by the international community to coordinate humanitarian relief operations due to natural and human-made disasters in areas beyond the relief capacity of national authorities alone. We evaluate the work of the Organization in providing and coordinating humanitarian relief quickly and efficiently to those in need.

Organizational management and support

The UN Secretariat, as one of the main organs of the system, carries out the day-to-day work of the Organization including internal processes and outputs and the delivery of services to Member States for conferences, meetings, and other events. We evaluate how well the Organization is performing against its corporate goals and standards.
